DAAD Scholarships in Germany

DAAD awards Research Grants – One-Year Grants for Doctoral Candidates for PhD students from almost all countries of origin. A grant for a full doctoral programme in Germany is offered primarily to applicants from developing and threshold countries.

Masters Studies

This scholarship programme offers you the opportunity to continue your academic education in Germany with a postgraduate course of study. The programme provides funding for a postgraduate or Master’s degree programme completed at a state or state-recognised university in Germany or one year of study in Germany as part of a second or Master’s degree completed at your home university.

Eligibility

You are eligible to apply if you have finished your first degree (e.g., Bachelor’s or Diploma) by the time the funding term begins.

Scholarship Benefits and Duration

Depending on the length of your chosen programme, the scholarship is intended for visits of between 10 and 24 months.
The scholarships are awarded for the duration of the standard period of study for the chosen programme (up to a maximum of 24 months). Benefits include:

  • Scholarship payments of 861 euros a month
  • Payments towards health, accident and personal liability insurance cover
  • Travel allowance
  • One-off study allowance (if you come from a DAC country, you will receive a flat rate of € 460; for all other countries the grant is € 260)

Under certain circumstances, scholarship holders may receive the following additional benefits:

  • Monthly rent subsidy
  • Monthly allowance for accompanying members of family. Please also read our important information for scholarship applicants / section F, point 3
  • In the case of a disability or chronic illness: subsidy for additional costs which result from the disability or chronic illness and are not covered by other funding providers

Selection Criteria

Selection will be based on the following;

  • Potential of the applicant
  • Quality of the study project
  • Academic qualification that is; academic achievements, school leaving certificate, if applicable, course of studies, knowledge of the language of instruction or working language, and if applicable, relevant internships, and work experience.

Doctoral Studies

This scholarship programme offers you the opportunity to complete your doctoral degree in Germany. The programme provides funding for a doctoral project at a state or state-recognised institution of higher education or a non-university research institute in Germany. This can either be an individual project supervised by a university teacher (doctoral supervisor) or participation in a structured doctoral study programme.

Eligibility

You can apply if you have above-average qualifications and you completed your Master’s degree or Diploma, or in exceptional cases a Bachelor’s degree, at the latest by the time the funding period begins.

Scholarship Benefits and Duration

Funding is provided for a maximum of four years; the length of the funding period is decided by a selection committee and depends on your project and study plan. Grants are initially awarded for a maximum of one year. Extensions depend on whether the selection committee considers your previous award period to have been successfully completed. Benefits include:

  • Monthly payments of 1,200 euros
  • Payments towards health, accident and personal liability insurance cover
  • Travel allowance
  • annual research allowance. If you come from a DAC country, you will receive a flat rate of € 460 (€ 230 in the fourth year); for all other countries the grant is € 260 (€ 130 in the fourth year).
